Support your local football team
By Brian Sherman
Imagine being brought up in a country (Scotland) where most people support a football team on the basis of religion. Supporting a team that they will probably never go and see or even really want to see but will wear a replica football top and/or abuse fans of the "other team". Ok, there are genuine "old firm" fans who follow their team every week but there are also fans who come from places like Aberdeen and Dundee every week by the coachload instead of supporting their local team. These are mainly the "glory hunters" who dont support their local team as they dont win anything. I'm part of a small band of football fan who does support their local team, even though I have now moved country. These are the type of fan who will drive hundreds of miles on a winters night to stand on a freezing terrace at places like Berwick and Forfar watching a dull game that ends up 0:0 when they could be nice and warm in their own home. Maybe they would watch it if it was on TV or listen on radio but nearly all types of media assumes there is no football outside of the SPL, which is sad. There are loads of us fans about but supporting a team that isnt rangers or celtic is seen as being "unfashionable" but we dont care. A 1:0 victory against our local rivals is just as good in our eyes as a win for those big teams in the European cups. Large teams get their money with sponsorship, merchandising and especially the lucrative TV companies who fall over themselves to screen "the old firm" but smaller clubs rely on attendances, the small club shop and quite often the Social club where fans will go before and after the game to celebrate or drown their sorrows. They rely more on fans than the big clubs so if your team is lucky they will get a big team in a cup competition that will bring the crowds flocking and the turnstiles ringing and even a new player but most of all it can bring a bit of financial stability. Support your local team with your heart, rather than someone elses local team. |
